Lila had been on edge for hours, so when the lock to her door clicked open, and Ceiridwen poked her head inside, Lila jumped. She only got a few restless hours of sleep, having forced herself into bed for as long as possible knowing that she would need it.

After spotting Lila on the couch, Ceiridwen slipped inside. She clutched a leather bag to her stomach, and Lila hoped it was full of food and possibly anything else useful she might have found.

Ceiridwen was still dressed in a thin cotton gown of a slave, which was going to be a problem if they were going to make it more than two feet outside of the castle. Thankfully, Lila had already planned for this.

She patted the side of the couch, where she’d draped a wool and fur gown, warm enough to survive the chill of outside—because even though the underground city was far warmer than the surface, it was still cold. And it was nice enough for Cei to pass as someone more important than a slave. Her slave mark wasn’t anywhere visible, like Lila’s, so they would use that to their advantage during their escape.

“Put this on. Hurry,” Lila said, gesturing to the dress.

Ceiridwen’s eyes widened when she saw it, but she didn’t question the command and went to change, quickly coming out several minutes later. Lila gathered everything they needed and waited for her by the door, her heart hammering in her chest. But there was still the niggling fear in the back of her mind that if they weren’t fast, something would go wrong.

“Do you know the way to the underground city?” Lila asked when Ceiridwen joined her by the door. She shook her head. “Okay. This has to be the upper part of the castle because we can see out to the surface, which means we will have to go down at least four floors before we’ll find a way out. If we run into any vampires, don’t rush away. Act like you belong. Let me do the talking if you’re too scared.”

“How do you know this much?” Ceiridwen asked, her eyes wide and trusting.

Lila averted her eyes and wedged the door open. “This isn’t my first time in Elysium, Cei.”

Cei’s mouth opened with a loaded question, but Lila chose that moment to check the hall. Seeing that it was clear, she stepped out. Now wasn’t the time for her to reveal to her friend all that had transpired in the three years that she’d lived beneath Aleister’s thumb. Or the weight of trauma she’d taken back with her to Earth when Aleister finally let her go.

Only to come back and steal her away again.

Lips pressed into a thin, determined line, she marched along ahead of Cei, who hurried along to keep up. The halls
